Why Mums Deserve to be in the Photos too.

Mama, where are you in the photos?

You plan everything, organise everything and everyone, but yet you are missing. You take the photos, but no one takes them of you.

I bet if you scroll through the photos on your phone you will find millions of your kids, your kids with important family members, your kids with their friends, maybe a recipe to two you have screen shot and some other things you have an interest in.

I bet there are hardly any of you. And even less of you with your children. And the ones that you do have are selfies that accentuate all the bits you’d rather forget were there. Am I close?

One day your kids will look back at the photos, maybe even show them to their own children and they will want to see photos of you. They will want to see that the person who created all the magic from their childhood.

How often have you thought about getting the photos done but think ‘I’ll wait until I lose a bit of weight’ or ‘I’ll wait until I’ve been to the hair dressers or had my nails done’ or any other numbers of reasons not to do it now?

The truth is, there is never a perfect time and while you are waiting for that singular perfect moment, your kids are growing and that version of them has passed.

The transition from maiden to mother, or matrescence, is an event of astronomical importance that changes the way you see the world, they way your think about yourself and how you prioritise. You are literally re-wired to put your children first. And in doing so, we often put ourselves last. Take this as a gentle nudge, from one mother to another, to put yourself first, be front and centre, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable. Any photographer worth their salt will help you feel comfortable and at ease.

You, as we all do, look at photographs of yourself and see everything wrong, everything you don’t like. But what do your children see?

They see themselves cuddled up in the arms of the person who makes them feel safe. They see the smile and the laugh that makes them feel warm. They see the eyes that make them feel seen. They see their mom. All the parts of you that make you special.

Think of it this way - the photos are not just for you. They are a gift for your children. They will become the notes from that specific time that bring back memories that, perhaps, had long been forgotten and they will remember how much you love them.

So what is a session with me like?

Put simply, it is time for you to spend with your children without the distractions of daily life. It is time to go for a walk, to have cuddles, to play, to hold hands, to be together.

I will give you gentle prompts to help guide your interactions. I will gently pose you, if that is what you want, but it is not something that has to happen if you do not feel comfortable.

Ultimately, I keep sessions relaxed and will meet you and your children where you are.
